Otterly Amazing

1/2/2015

If ever you needed proof that Otters are on the increase, a trip to Leighton Moss should convince you.  With up to six otters on view for at least two hours, "Public Hide" was the place to be this morning.  Mark and I caught all the action, spot-lit by glorious winter sunshine...

Otters (five of them) 01/02/15, Leighton Moss, Silverdale, Lancs. Couldn't fit the sixth one on the same shot.

Bittern, 01/02/15, Leighton Moss. Again from Public Hide. Never thought I'd ignore a family of otters to focus on something else!
Picture
Marsh Harrier, 01/02/15, Leighton Moss. Garnishing the air, just to add further distraction.
By 11AM the hide was packed so Mark and I hit the road once more, heading south via Pilling...

Carrion Crow, 01/02/14, Leighton Moss. I don't normally bother with crows but look at this one, seen on the way back to the car.

An unremarkable Pilling area prompted a trip to West Lancashire, first stop: Mere Sands Wood.  I had forgotten how excellent their feeding station is...

And a trip to West Lancashire isn't complete without a visit to Martin Mere.  The 3PM feeding frenzy lived up to expectations...

Whooper Swan, 01/02/15, Martin Mere. Who said there was no such thing as a free lunch?
