Argeles sur Mer on the French Mediterranean coastline is our favourite summer retreat. The area has everything a family could wish for but best of all, its wildlife heaven. The range of habitats is impressive: beach, scrub, semi-arid desert, forest, river, marsh, salt-lake and mountain habitats are all within a 10 mile radius of La Sirene, a brilliant campsite which has plenty of wildlife itself...
Crested Tit, 29/08/14, La Sirene Campsite, Argeles. Aside from ubiquitous House Sparrows, this is the commonest small bird on site.
Red Squirrel, 29/07/14, La Sirene, Argeles. Common in the area.
Geranium Bronze Butterfly, 29/07/14, La Sirene, Argeles. Originally from Africa this species was introduced in Spain and is now prolific in this area of France.
Langs Short-tailed Blue, 29/07/14, La Sirene, Argeles. Totally absent in Britain, this is probably the commonest butterfly in Argeles.
Oryctes nasicornis, 29/07/14, La Sirene, Argeles. There are some seriously large insects down here including this beast modelled by Holly. Ben keeps his distance.
