Visited France mid-week for some liquid provisions. The boat from Dover to Calais was very productive too: loads of sea birds, far more than in the summer months, some flying right along side us...   Gannet, 15/02/16, English Channel.  This particular gannet flew really close to the deck, just a few meters away.  Same gannet.  Kittiwake, 15/02/16, English Channel. Again, very close. Gillemots, 15/02/16, English Channel.  Couldn't resist this shot. With rancid weather hindering photography this weekend, I took the opportunity to sort out my Barrier Reef photos. My newly ordered book: "Coral Reef Fishes" by Liesk an Myers and the excellent website: www.fishesofaustralia pretty much took care of any ID issues. Trawling through all the pictures brought back great memories of Aus. The still shots are now in my sea fishes section, now I just need to trawl through and edit all my movie footage. Just one of the many boats that visit the reef every day from Cairns. Try to book with a company that stay out there for the longest possible time. You haven't come all this way for a quick dip and a barbie!  All you need for underwater photography. Hire your underwater camera from a shop in Cairns: Calipso is a good one and near to the boat terminal. Flippers and a stinger-suit are optional but recommended.  Popular hire-cameras in Cairns are these Panasonic Lumix compact cameras contained in Perspex housing. The metal buttons on the plastic casing press the camera buttons. Try to familiarise yourself with these buttons well before your reef trip.  The camera and instructions come in a carry-case like this. A memory card comes with the camera, which you get to keep, but its a good idea to bring your own SD card, preferably one with a lot of memory space, especially if you are filming. |
