Lancashire has some of the best birding locations in Europe. Photography is excellent all year round and nature reserves are everywhere. Leighton Moss, Martin Mere, Marshside, Mere Sands Wood, and Warton Crag are just some of the reserves featured on this site. When not at these, I like to explore local haunts just walking distance from home. The River Ribble, for example, seems to get better every year, then there's Hurst Grange Park, Blashaw Woods, Priory Meadow, Howick Hall Wood, Preston Junction Nature Reserve...
For our summer holiday we usually head to France. Here, almost all my photography occurs between 6am and 10am (when the family are still fast asleep). Within walking distance of our favourite campsite in Argeles, there is a nature reserve where the River Tech meets the Mediterranean. Early in the morning, this place is alive with birds, many of which are scarce or non-existent in the UK. Birding is equally fruitful in the Ardeche, Camargue, Pyranees, and even in certain roadside resting places along the way.
